I see this relates to a topic
I see this relates to a topic I just commented on.
There are not a number of comments here though, as this is more recent of a posting of yours, I'll repost what I said before under
"Religion => Ignorance"
But I'll add to it. Do you think there are atheists (some not all as not all Christians are fundamentalists) out there attacking reality like Creationists do simply because it interferes with their atheism (and more pointedly their version of it)?
You note correctly some people call you "militant" and you don't sound like you approve of it. But you used terms you know others find insulting-like "sky fairy" or "delusion". It is at least a bit hypocritical that you feel free to insult and get upset when others refer to you in a manner you don't like. I've personally seen the Westboro Baptists as they protested an AIDS walk I took part in. They are at least as "outspoken" as you but also just as "non-violent" if judged by the fact that they protest and insult people but don't physically assault them on the streets. People don't call them "militant", they call them "crazy". That is hardly gentle or approving.
From before:
"Is this ignorance of a slightly different kind?
Notice that the majority of people who attend church weekly are not against evolution. You appear to assume religion opposes the theory of evolution while the chart you reference disproves your notion.
Also there have been societies where attempts were made to stamp out religion. Communist Russia, France during the Terror, and Cambodia under Pol Pot. Besides having an atheist government each of these periods
marked deep brutality by a government towards its own people.
Far from a "perfect" society.
Getting back to is this just another type of ignorance? Some Fundamentalists of the Islamic variety-though there are plenty belonging to other religions as well-think that there will only be a "just" society when everyone in the world is muslim (and I suspect not just any type of muslim, but a member of their variety). This is an ignorance similar to that of the KKK member who thinks thieving will end if black people leave his town, state, nation and so on.
It is saying anyone who is different from my group (minority or majority) is the problem and good things will happen when we get rid of them. It, especially if combined with a willingness to use violence, is a recipe for a bloody, brutal, and ignorant (through bigotry be it by skin color, religious, or ethnic group) society.
